Can you replace just the condenser and keep my indoor coil?
Sometimes. The indoor coil has to be compatible with the new condenser in refrigerant type, capacity and metering device. If it is, and it is in good condition, replacing only the outdoor unit is a reasonable saving. If the coil is old, leaking or runs R-22, it needs to go too.
Is it worth repairing an older condenser?
For a capacitor, contactor or fan motor, usually yes, even on an older unit. For a compressor or a leaking coil on a system past its expected life or running a discontinued refrigerant, the repair often costs a large share of a new system without the efficiency or the warranty. We price both so you can decide.
Why does my condenser keep tripping the breaker?
Common causes are a compressor drawing too much current on start-up because of a weak capacitor, a failing compressor, a shorted fan motor, or a wiring or breaker problem. We test the electrical side first since we have electricians on the team.
Does the condenser have to be level?
Yes. A pad that has settled or heaved tilts the unit, which strains the refrigerant lines and can let compressor oil pool where it should not. We reset or replace the pad as part of any installation and check it on repairs.
How much clearance does the outdoor unit need?
Manufacturers specify a minimum on each side and above the fan discharge. In practice that means keeping shrubs, fences and siding well back so the coil can breathe, and leaving room to service the electrical panel on the unit.
