Rough-In Mistakes Get Buried, Then They Get Expensive
The rough-in is the one stage of a project that nobody sees when it is done. Drain pitch, vent routing, trap arm length, valve depth and stub-out heights all disappear behind drywall, tile and finished flooring. If any of it is wrong, the first sign is a gurgling drain, a sewer smell or a slow tub a year after the contractor has been paid.
Older North Jersey houses make it harder. Cast iron stacks that have thinned, galvanized supply lines with half their diameter lost to scale, joists that run the wrong way for the drain you need, and slabs with no record of what is underneath them. A rough-in plan that ignores what is already in the house tends to fail the inspection or fail the homeowner.
What Our Rough-In Plumbing Service Includes
We start with the plans and the existing plumbing, then lay out drain, waste and vent piping sized and pitched for the fixtures going in, with cleanouts where they can actually be reached. Water supply is run in copper or PEX with shutoffs and stub-outs set to the fixture specs, and where a range, dryer, boiler or outdoor appliance needs gas, we rough the gas line at the same time. New stacks and vents are tied into the existing system or run new through the roof as the layout requires.
For basement bathrooms and slab-on-grade additions we cut the slab, trench for the drain line, set it on proper bedding at a consistent pitch, and tie it into the building drain or an ejector pit. Everything is pressure tested or water tested, we pull the plumbing permit and schedule the rough inspection, and we coordinate with the general contractor, framer and electrician so the walls are not closed before the inspector has signed off.

Our Rough-In Plumbing Process
Review the plans and the existing plumbing
We look at the drawings, the fixture list and what is already in the house, including the stack, the building drain and the water service, and flag anything that will not support the new layout.
Scope, price and permit
You get a written scope and a firm price approved before work starts. We pull the plumbing permit and schedule the rough inspection with the local code office.
Under-slab and in-wall rough
Slab cutting, trenching and bedding come first where needed, then drain, vent, supply and gas piping is run through the framing with stub-outs set to the fixture specifications.
Test and rough inspection
Drain and vent lines are filled and checked, supply and gas lines are pressure tested, and the inspector signs off before anyone hangs drywall or pours concrete over the trench.
Coordinate and return for finish
We hand off to the framer, electrician and drywall crew, then come back to set fixtures and trim once the finished surfaces are in.

Rough-In Plumbing FAQs
Do I need a permit for rough-in plumbing?
Yes. New drain, vent, water or gas piping requires a plumbing permit and a rough inspection before the walls or slab are closed. We pull the plumbing permit and schedule the rough inspection as part of the job.
Can you add a bathroom in a basement that sits below the sewer line?
Yes. When the fixtures are below the building drain, we install a sewage ejector pit and pump and rough the drains to it. The trench for the drain lines is cut into the slab and the pit is set at the low point.
Do you work with my general contractor?
Yes, and we prefer it. We coordinate with the GC, framer and electrician on layout, sequencing and inspection timing so nobody has to open up finished work.
What if you find old galvanized or cast iron pipe once things are open?
We tell you right away and give you a firm price for dealing with it. Tying new plumbing into failing pipe is rarely worth it, and the rough-in stage is the least expensive time to replace it.
Do you rough in gas lines too?
Yes. If the project includes a gas range, dryer, boiler, water heater or outdoor appliance, we run the gas piping during the same rough-in and pressure test it for inspection.
