Somerville is the county seat, a compact borough with a walkable downtown, a busy rail station and blocks of Victorian and early-twentieth-century houses on small lots around the center. Buildings of that vintage tend to have original hot-water or steam heat, cast iron waste piping, and mechanical rooms that were laid out for equipment nobody makes anymore. Mixed-use buildings downtown add another layer, since apartments and storefronts often share the same piping.

What We See in Somerville Homes & Buildings
- The close-built older housing near the center still runs on hot-water or steam heat, and much of it has been repaired in pieces over many decades.
- Two-family conversions and apartments over storefronts frequently share a drain stack and sometimes one heating plant, which changes how a repair gets scoped and scheduled.
- Cast iron waste piping and older laterals under a long-established street grid are the norm, so a camera inspection before any digging usually saves real money.

Somerville Plumbing & HVAC FAQs
Where would the outdoor unit even go on a small borough lot like ours?
That is the first thing we work out on a site visit. A narrow side yard, a flat roof section over a rear addition, or a spot behind the house can all work if the clearances and the electrical run are right, and the indoor heads can be fed through closets rather than open wall chases.
Can you take care of kitchen drain trouble for a downtown restaurant?
Yes, and it is steady work in a center like this one. We clear and jet grease-loaded lines, then run a camera so you know whether the cause is the slope of the pipe, a bad fitting, or simply how much grease the line sees.
One joint on our cast iron waste stack is rusted through. Does the entire stack need to come out?
Usually no. The camera shows us whether the rest of the stack still has wall thickness, and if it does we cut in a replacement section and band it back into the existing pipe. Full stack replacement is a recommendation we save for pipe that has thinned or split over its whole run.
